Elizabeth "Betty" Materna, 83, of Tewksbury MA, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 surrounded by family. Betty was born in Erie, PA on May 8, 1939 to the late John E Barber and the late Madeline A Barber. She was a proud Nursing graduate of Mount Mercy College in Pittsburgh, PA and spent her career caring for people, predominately in a geriatric long term care setting.

Betty enjoyed growing vegetables from seeds in her garden (most recently the Tewksbury community garden), volunteering at the food pantry, exercising with her bone builders friends at the Tewksbury senior center, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, reading, knitting, and spending time with her family. In recent years, Betty could often be found hanging out in the dog park, having made instant friends with all the dogs who lived at Balsam Place.

Betty is survived by her son David Materna, his wife Ruth Materna of Chelmsford, MA and their 3 children Chris, Danny, and Michelle Materna. Her daughter Mary Fowler and her husband Art Fowler of Travelers Rest, SC. Her sister Rita J. Moser and her husband Robert.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Francis Materna in July 1969 and her brother John W. Barber of Ohio in September 2012.

At Betty's request, there will be no public viewing and a private family celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tewksbury Food Pantry or to your local Food Pantry.
