John Nobriga, 75, formerly of Massachusetts and a longtime resident of Arizona, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025 after a courageous battle with metastatic lung cancer. Born and raised in New Bedford, he graduated from New Bedford High School where he enjoyed playing soccer. He went on to study Automotive Technology and ultimately opened his own Getty service station in Fairhaven.
He was also a member of the 6th Bristol Club and a lifelong member of the Elks.
John moved to Arizona, where he spent the last three decades of his life with his late wife of 33 years, Christine. He built a meaningful career as a valued Activities Director at the Mi Casa Nursing Center, where his creativity and care brought joy to countless residents. When he was not planning events, John could often be found at a local sports bar with friends, enthusiastically betting on the “ponies.”
In June, John returned to Massachusetts and embraced every moment of his final days with his loved ones, known fondly as his “adventure team.” Together they vacationed at a beach house, enjoyed family dinners, visited Foxwoods and Encore, chartered a fishing boat, and traveled to his hometown to reconnect with old friends and spend time with his beloved dog, Allie.
John will be remembered for his charm, his quick wit, and his unmatched ability to tell the same bad Dad jokes to anyone willing to listen.
He was predeceased by his supportive parents, Conceicao and Edward Nobriga, and his wife, Christine Kennedy.
Survived by his loving sister, Theresa Fernandes and soulmate Louie Fernandes; his daughters, Sherri Nobriga-Bonica and husband Jason, Ashley Koles and husband Roman, and Kelley Resendes and husband Nicholas; his six beautiful grandchildren; nephew Brian Fernandes and family, as well as his loyal dog, Allie.
Per John’s wishes, no services will be held. To honor his passion for helping others, the family kindly asks that donations in his memory be made to the Mi Casa Resident Council Fund at the Mi Casa Nursing Center (c/o Evelyn Alvaran), 330 S Pinnule Circle, Mesa, AZ 85206

John reminded us that humor is a gift, charm is an art and love – well, love is the legacy we leave behind. His spirit, his wisdom, and charming ways will live on in all of us who were lucky to know him.

RIP my friend. I will miss you.
We had many years together, I think it was around 15 or 16. And a lot of stories. Know that you are loved by many.
